Stroke/ Traumatic Brain Injury Therapies
According
to the Centers for Disease Control, Stroke is the third largest cause of
death for both men and women in the United States. Strokes are caused by a restricted
blood flow to one or more areas of the brain, many times caused by a blood
clot and results in a deficiency of oxygen to the brain cells. Many times this lack of oxygenation in the
brain may cause sections of the brain to cease normal function. Stroke
symptoms include sudden numbness or weakness, sometimes occurring on one side
of the body, sudden confusion or mental imparity, difficulty walking,
dizziness, or sudden vision impairment.
We have seen great success in our Stroke and Brain Injured patients
using the following therapies:
Hyperbaric Oxygen Many times, a stroke can cause some cells in
the brain to be dormant. These "sleeping cells" differ from brain
cells that have died in that they can be awakened and develop into fully
functioning cells with increased oxygen delivery. The metabolism
of oxygen and nutrients within the brain tissue is restored, assisting in the
renewal of damaged areas which are suffering from hypoxia or lack of oxygen
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the most
effective means to increase the oxygen supply and is considered a safe and
promising treatment for stroke patients.
Patients lay comfortably in an oxygen rich chamber under a slight
pressurization, which assists in the absorption of oxygen. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is
utilized in the treatment of stroke and severe brain injured patients and
research has proven its safety and effectiveness for these conditions dating
back to 1965. HBOT generates new blood vessels and improves
circulation to damaged areas of the brain.
The hyperbaric chamber pressurizes to force oxygen into the blood
stream and tissues of the body, resulting in a greater absorption of
oxygen. This high oxygen absorption
does not occur when breathing oxygen in normal atmospheric pressure. At our medical clinic, we have treated
several stroke and brain injured patients with mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy
and have seen the following benefits:
