Cerebral Palsy Therapies
Cerebral Palsy
It has been estimated that more than half a
million Americans have Cerebral Palsy (CP). Cerebral Palsy is a group of
chronic motor disorders resulting from damage to the motor areas of the
brain, which impair the ability to control movement. Cerebral palsy is caused
by the inability of the brain to communicate with the muscles due to damaged
areas of the brain and is thought to be the result of an occurrence that
caused a lack of oxygen to the brain. Symptoms and severity of
Cerebral Palsy vary from individual to individual. The area of brain injury and severity of
the damage determine symptoms that are experienced. The most common symptoms include impairment in movement
control, motor function, vision, hearing, speech and mental ability. Cerebral Palsy
Treatment
We utilize integrative and complementary medicine to treat
the patient as a whole rather than on a symptom-by-symptom basis. Rather than just giving you the tools to
simply cope with the condition, we focus on improving the patient condition
and quality of life through cutting edge, non-invasive medical
therapies. We have seen great success in our Cerebral
Palsy patients using the following therapies:
Hyperbaric Therapy for Cerebral Palsy Medical research now exists that clearly demonstrates
dramatic improvements in Cerebral Palsy symptoms with hyperbaric oxygen
therapy. Many times in Cerebral
Palsy, dormant cells exist, usually due to a lack of oxygen to the
brain. These "sleeping
cells" differ from brain cells that have died in that they can be
revived and develop into fully functioning cells with increased oxygen
delivery. HBO therapy reduces
swelling in the brain, and provides an ideal environment for the development
of new brain tissues. HBOT provides a substantial n increase in tissue
oxygenation, significantly increasing the rate of healing, and restoration of
damaged and impaired tissues due to inadequate blood flow. Improvements in Cerebral Palsy patients
include enhanced vision, hearing, and speech, improved motor function and
cognitive abilities. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
is the most effective means to increase the oxygen supply and is considered a
safe and promising treatment for stroke patients. Patients lay comfortably in an oxygen rich chamber under a
slight pressurization, which assists in the absorption of oxygen. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is
utilized in the treatment of stroke and severe brain injured patients and
research has proven its safety and effectiveness for these conditions dating
back to 1965. HBOT generates new blood
vessels and improves circulation to damaged areas of the brain. The hyperbaric chamber pressurizes to
force oxygen into the blood stream and tissues of the body, resulting in a
greater absorption of oxygen. This
high oxygen absorption does not occur when breathing oxygen in normal
atmospheric pressure. At our associated clinics,
we have treated several people with Cerebral Palsy using mild hyperbaric
oxygen therapy and have seen the following benefits:
